Not All Heart Risk Is Within Your Control — And That’s Exactly Why Awareness Matters

Not all heart risk is within your control.

Age.
Genetics.
Sex.
Ethnicity.

Heart & Stroke’s national report categorizes these as nonmodifiable risk factors — variables we cannot change.

But nonmodifiable does not mean untouchable.

It means informative.

The Role of Genetics and Biology

Family history is one of the strongest predictors of cardiovascular risk.

If a first-degree relative experienced early heart disease or stroke, your baseline risk may be higher.

Certain inherited lipid disorders, for example, can dramatically elevate cholesterol levels from a young age.

Biological sex also influences risk patterns:

• Men tend to develop heart disease earlier
• Women’s risk increases significantly after menopause
• Pregnancy complications (such as preeclampsia) increase long-term cardiovascular risk

Ethnicity can influence prevalence of hypertension, diabetes and metabolic syndrome.

These patterns are well documented at the population level.

Why Awareness Changes Outcomes

The misconception is this:

“If it runs in my family, there’s nothing I can do.”

The data says otherwise.

When nonmodifiable risks are present, early screening and proactive lifestyle management significantly reduce event likelihood.

Family history should trigger:

• Earlier blood pressure screening
• Earlier lipid testing
• Stronger lifestyle emphasis
• Regular monitoring

It is a cue for earlier prevention — not resignation.

A Practical Step

If you haven’t had this conversation, ask:

• Has anyone in our family had heart disease before age 55 (men) or 65 (women)?
• Is there a history of stroke?
• Has anyone had persistently high cholesterol?

Document it.

Bring it to your healthcare provider.

Prevention begins with information.

And information creates power — not fear.
