Heart & Stroke BLS Provider Course
The Heart & Stroke Basic Life Support (BLS) CPR Provider Course, is the required CPR renewal course for Healthcare Providers (HCP) in Alberta. This BLS Provider Renewal course is approved by the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Alberta Health Services and follows ILCOR guidelines.
This course, taught by accredited training instructors, includes adult, child and infant CPR with AED training. This course teaches learners to promptly recognize several life-threatening emergencies, give high-quality chest compressions, deliver appropriate ventilations, and provide early use of an AED. The BLS provider course includes realistic scenarios, simulations and state-of-the-art animations, and incorporates Heart & Stroke’s proven practice-while-watching video format which reflects the science of the most recent Guidelines Update for CPR and ECC to the front-line practitioner.
Intended Audience:
The Heart & Stroke BLS course is designed for healthcare professionals and trained first responders who provide care to patients in a wide variety of both in-facility and prehospital settings or by those that require BLS certification and CPR training to enter into a healthcare-related training program.

BLS Renewal Course Prerequisites:
You’ll need the current Heart & Stroke BLS Provider certification (taken within the last 12 months with the most recent Guidelines) or successful completion of the online Heart&Stroke BLS Renewal Prerequisite Challenge. Sorry, no exceptions.
BLS Provider Renewal Course Details
Enjoy a fast-paced course that allows experienced BLS providers the opportunity to demonstrate knowledge through written and skills assessment in a concentrated program. Successful completion of this two hour 50 minute course allows students to renew their BLS course completion card.
This BLS Renewal course is fast-paced, assumes you’ve retained the knowledge in the Heart&Stroke BLS Provider course, and can demonstrate your skills. This is not a beginner’s course, and there will be limited opportunities for remedial coaching.
All participants are expected to be highly proficient BLS providers. Unfortunately, students who are unsuccessful in the skills or knowledge test will have to take a full BLS Provider course.

Heart & Stroke Standard First Aid BLS Course
Perfect for the go-getters and career requirements, this 18-hour course combines our Standard First Aid and Basic Life Support (BLS) Provider courses for an unparalleled understanding of emergency response and care. Our instructor-led course is designed to meet provincial workplace requirements, and is intended for healthcare and emergency care providers across varying disciplines. The course reinforces how to recognize and stabilize ill or injured persons, provide CPR, use an AED, and relieve choking quickly and safely. Successful students earn a 3-year Standard First Aid certification and one-year BLS Provider card.
