Bath time has that magic to it — the warm water, the soft splashes, the giggles as toys float. But some of those favourite bath toys? They may be holding more than just water.
When moisture gets trapped inside toys — especially squeezable ones — it creates the perfect little environment for mold and bacteria. And since babies love to chew, squish, and squirt, moldy water can end up in their mouths, eyes, or even noses before we realize it.
But before we panic and clear out the whole bath bin, take a breath. We don’t need to do everything perfectly — we just need to know what can help.
What to Know About Bath Toy Mold
Mold loves warm, damp, enclosed spaces — and squeeze toys with tiny holes are kind of its dream home. Even if the outside of a toy looks spotless, the inside might be a different story. Small amounts of mold may not always cause harm, but for babies with sensitivities or allergies, it can lead to irritated eyes, skin reactions, or breathing issues. It’s worth paying attention to — especially since these are toys that go right up to little faces.
Here’s What Can Help
Choose different toys:
Skip the ones with holes, or seal the holes with hot glue to keep water out
Look for toys that are solid, easy to open, or labeled dishwasher safe
Silicone cups, floating blocks, and soft washcloth puppets are all great choices
Clean them regularly:
Once a week, soak toys in a mix of vinegar and water (about 1 part vinegar to 10 parts water)
Rinse well and let them dry fully
If a toy smells musty or has black spots (potential mold), it’s time to toss it
Let everything dry out:
Store toys in a mesh or open bin that drains well
Avoid leaving toys sitting in the tub or in containers with standing water
If a toy still feels damp by the next bath, rotate it out and let it dry completely
